Psyllium + Statins: A Smarter Combo for Lower Cholesterol

Psyllium + Statins: A Smarter Combo for Lower Cholesterol

If you already take a statin, adding psyllium fiber could amplify its cholesterol-lowering power—without increasing the dose. Researchers reviewed three clinical trials in adults with high LDL cholesterol and found that combining psyllium (7–15 g per day) with a standard statin such as simvastatin, atorvastatin, or lovastatin produced extra reductions in LDL levels.

In one study, 10 mg of simvastatin plus psyllium lowered LDL by 63 mg/dL—roughly the same effect as doubling the statin dose to 20 mg. Another trial showed a 31 % LDL drop with atorvastatin + psyllium versus 23 % with atorvastatin alone. Side effects were mild and mostly digestive.

Psyllium works by binding bile acids in the gut so they’re excreted instead of recycled; the liver then pulls more cholesterol from the bloodstream to replace them. Statins, meanwhile, reduce cholesterol production in the liver. Together, they tackle cholesterol from both directions—less made, more removed.

For people who can’t tolerate higher statin doses, this pairing may offer a practical middle ground. More research is needed to confirm long-term heart benefits, but it’s a simple, low-risk strategy worth discussing with a healthcare provider.
