But the ingredient label often tells a much bigger story.
At ProteinRx, we spent months researching, refining, and vetting our ingredient before launching our yeast-based protein blend.
Here are some of the ingredients we personally try to avoid when possible:
1. Added Sugars
Excess sugar can make it easier to over-consume calories and can crowd out more nutritious foods.
Common names:
- Sucrose
- Dextrose
- Glucose Syrup
- High Fructose Corn Syrup
ProteinRx: No added sugar.
2. Sugar Alcohols That Cause Digestive Distress
Many "low sugar" products rely on ingredients like:
- Maltitol
- Sorbitol
For some people these can cause:
- Gas
- Bloating
- Digestive discomfort
ProteinRx: No sugar alcohols.
3. Artificial Sweeteners
Some consumers prefer to avoid:
- Aspartame
- Sucralose
- Acesulfame Potassium
The research is still evolving, but many people report digestive or taste-related issues.
ProteinRx: Unsweetened, or optionally, sweetened only with monk fruit and/or stevia.
4. Artificial Food Dyes
Artificial colors add visual appeal but no nutritional value.
Examples:
- Red 40
- Yellow 5
- Blue 1

5. Hydrogenated Oils & Trans Fats
These are among the most studied ingredients linked to negative cardiovascular outcomes.

6. Excess Fillers
Many protein products contain long ingredient lists filled with gums, bulking agents, and inexpensive fillers.
Sometimes they're useful.
Sometimes they're there to cut costs.
ProteinRx: Just a handful of functional ingredients.
7. Highly Refined Corn-Based Additives
Common examples include:
- Maltodextrin
- Corn Syrup Solids
These are often used as cheap bulking or sweetening agents.
ProteinRx: None.
8. Protein Sources That Don't Agree With You
For some people:
- Whey causes digestive issues
- Soy causes sensitivities
- Pea protein can cause bloating
Everyone is different.
That's one reason we became interested in yeast protein.
9. Ingredients You Can't Pronounce (and Can't Explain)
Not every scientific-sounding ingredient is bad.
But if a company can't clearly explain why an ingredient is included, that's worth questioning.
We believe labels should be simple.
10. Marketing Hype
Our least favorite ingredient.
Buzzwords.
Miracle claims.
Detox promises.
Protein is supposed to help you meet your nutrition goals, not solve every problem in your life.
Humans keep trying to turn food into religion. The protein powder aisle is often where that religion gets particularly weird.

Ingredient Glossary: Common Protein Powder Ingredients We Avoid
Below are common ingredients found in protein bars, shakes, and powders that we chose not to use in ProteinRx.
Maltitol
A sugar alcohol often used in “low sugar” protein bars and snacks. It can cause gas, bloating, and digestive distress for some people, especially at higher amounts.
ProteinRx: No maltitol. No sugar alcohols.
Polydextrose
A synthetic fiber/bulking ingredient used to add texture, sweetness, or fiber. Some people tolerate it fine, but others may experience bloating or digestive discomfort.
ProteinRx: No polydextrose.
Sucralose
An artificial sweetener used in many protein powders and sports drinks. Some people avoid it because of taste, digestion, or concerns about long-term gut effects.
ProteinRx: No sucralose.
Aspartame
Another artificial sweetener commonly used in diet foods and drinks. We chose not to use it.
ProteinRx: No aspartame.
Artificial Colors
Synthetic dyes like Red 40, Yellow 5, and Blue 1 are used for appearance, not nutrition.
ProteinRx: No artificial colors.
Carrageenan
A thickener and stabilizer often used in shakes, dairy alternatives, and processed foods. Some people avoid it because it may bother digestion.
ProteinRx: No carrageenan.
Canola Oil
A refined seed oil sometimes found in bars and processed snacks. We avoid adding refined oils where they aren’t needed.
ProteinRx: No canola oil.
Sunflower Oil
Often used in processed bars and snacks. We use sunflower lecithin, not sunflower oil, as a functional mixing ingredient.
ProteinRx: No sunflower oil.
Palm Kernel Oil / Palm Oil
Used in many bars for texture and shelf stability. We avoid it because it isn’t needed in a clean protein powder.
ProteinRx: No palm oil or palm kernel oil.
Glucose Syrup
A refined sweetener that can raise sugar content quickly.
ProteinRx: No glucose syrup.
High Fructose Corn Syrup
A highly processed sweetener commonly found in processed foods.
ProteinRx: No HFCS.
Maltodextrin
A refined carbohydrate often used as a filler, thickener, or carrier ingredient.
ProteinRx: No maltodextrin.
Hydrogenated Oils & Trans Fats
Highly processed fats that do not belong in a daily protein product.
ProteinRx: No hydrogenated oils. No trans fats.
Excess Fillers
Some protein products use long ingredient lists to improve texture, reduce cost, or bulk up the product.
